OUR STORY BEGINS

SMELLS LIKE MONEY

Mill City began with a simple sketch—a smokestack character named Smokie—and the playful phrase “Smells Like Money.” What started as a joke quickly sparked something bigger: a full line of products celebrating our small town of Chillicothe and mill cities across the United States. Inspired by pride, tradition, and a love for where we’re from, we set out to honor the hardworking spirit of every blue-collar community through designs that are meaningful, fun, and made to be worn proudly.

it's all about pride

My grandpa, Gale DePugh, was one of my heroes. A proud World War II veteran, he spent his life working as a carpenter at the paper mill until retiring in the 1960s. Growing up, I loved hearing his stories about the mill and how deeply it mattered—not just to our family, but to the entire community. His pride was undeniable, and it lives on in me. I’ll never forget his favorite saying whenever that smell rolled in: “Smells like money.”

about the owner

Jarrod DePugh is a lifelong Chillicothe native who’s been drawing for as long as he can remember—always the kid with a pencil in hand. It wasn’t until much later in life—married and with kids—that he finally pursued design full time. In 2016, he co-founded Metropolis Design Studios, a local creative business that’s proudly served clients like the epic outdoor drama Tecumseh! (for over 10 seasons), Homeland Bank, and many other local and regional businesses. With a deep passion for quality design and an almost obsessive drive to keep things fresh and creative, Jarrod brings storytelling and heart into every project. As the owner of Mill City, he finds joy working in the shop in historic downtown, watching locals smile and reminisce about their shared history. Jarrod is devoted to celebrating and preserving Chillicothe’s rich legacy—one design, one shirt, and one story at a time.
